Manchester United won the Community Shield in Cardiff after beating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties. The game finished 1-1 in normal time. French defender Mikael Silvestre gave the Manchester team the lead after 15 minutes, taking advantage of slack marking in the Arsenal defence. Playing his first game after the FIFA Confederations Cup, Thierry Henry equalised with a direct free kick from 35 yards. In the second half, substitute Francis Jeffers was sent off after kicking Phil Neville. It was red card number 50 in manager Arsène Wenger's seven-year reign. Jeffers apologised after the match, and Wenger blamed the striker's frustration for his bad judgment. Both Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell were lucky to stay on the pitch after similar reactions to bad tackles. The FA's video advisory panel will wait for referee Steve Bennett's report before taking any action. In the shoot-out, Jens Lehmann saved from Ruud van Nistelrooy, but was unlucky when Ole Gunnar Solskjær's effort snuck in under his armpit... Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Robert Pires had their penalties saved by the Manchester United goalkeeper Tim Howard.
