As has been widely reported, an Arsenal fan was stabbed in
Copenhagen last night. He is in a "comfortable" condition in
hospital. Although it seems that the trouble was started by
Turkish fans, it does sound like there has been some active involvement on the part of English fans too,
and one should be careful not to prejudge the situation.
There have already been some shockingly worded reports,
describing the Turkish fans driving around waving flags and
honking horns as "provocative". Let's not lose sight of the fact
that the vast majority of them are fans like us (and that
there is a minority among "us" who are just as keen on violence as their minority), and that this
is their country's first ever European final. We'd be slagging
them off if they didn't get a bit excited. Let's just
hope that everyone can focus on the football as kick-off
approaches, and that everyone from both sets of fans gets
home safely.
What we do know is that Arsenal offered everyone on the official
trips to Copenhagen this morning the option of a full refund.
A fine gesture, but one which very few took advantage of.
Teams news is good: Lee Dixon has recovered from the slight groin injury he picked up in training last week. He played a
full part in training yesterday and has declared himself
fully fit and raring to go "if selected". Ljungberg and Manninger will, as suggested previously, miss the game. Arsenal will therefore almost certainly line up as follows: Seaman, Dixon, Adams, Keown, Silvinho, Parlour, Petit, Vieira, Overmars, Bergkamp, Henry. subs (7): Lukic, Winterburn, Grimandi, Kanu, Suker, Luzhny, Malz/Vernazza
Galatasaray's wounded are similarly desperate to play in
this match. Defender Popescu has seven stitches in his leg,
and midfielder Oran Buruk recently broke a bone in
his foot. But both are expected to feature.
