 UEFA eligibility "clarified" by Rupe
on 14/11/00 at 14:36
this is story 150 of 365 in this topic to date
Given the silly things being said about Vieira and Zidane, together with Arsenal's goalkeeping problems, it seems a good time to clarify the situation regarding new players eligibility for the Champions League.

  • First up, being cup-tied lasts all season. Therefore any player signed at any point in the season, who has already played in Europe that season for any other club, cannot play in UEFA competitions until next season.
PLEASE NOTE, this point is incorrect according to UEFA. Please see this newsreel update.
  • Arsenal submitted a list of 25 "A list" players to UEFA at the start of the season. See Europe page for the list, which includes an unknown number of "B list" players too.
  • We can register up to 3 new players, at any time before 1st February next year. These players would then be eligible for all matches from Feb 1st (ie match 3 of the second stage onwards). Other players might have to be removed from the "A list" to make room for the newcomers (the "A list" can never contain more than 25, but it's currently unclear how many Arsenal have on the "A list").
Therefore:
  • Players such as Zidane and Dudek, both rumoured to still be Arsenal targets, would not be able to play for us in Europe this year because they are cup-tied (and, in the case of Zidane, suspended).
WRONG! see see this newsreel update.
  • Igors Stepanovs could be eligible from match 3 of the second stage onwards, but only if Arsenal add him to the A list.
(Several readers have written in since I wrote this, pointing out that Stepanovs is cup-tied having played in the first qualifying round for his previous club Skonto Riga. We think they're probably right, but we do remember it being reported when we signed him that he'd be available for later stages. Of course, it wouldn't be like ArseWeb to believe everything we read in the papers! But there has to be a question mark over it still. So if anyone can find the relevant UEFA rule please send it to us. The UEFA web site's rules section is currently unavailable.)
  • The same goes for any player we sign before February,
