Latest on the potential postponement of the Spartak-Lyon match, from UEFA, is
that "Weather reports tell us that conditions have
eased."
Presumably, they're reading ArseWeb (see here for a
our "looking out the window" weather report).
Now we know (ahem) they're reading us, let's ask the all-important question:
why should the postponement of the Spartak-Lyon match affect the Bayern-Arsenal one?
The principle of playing final group matches simultaneously is of course sound. But there will be times when circumstances make it
superfluous, and this is one of them.
Spartak are already out, and the result of the match in Munich has no impact on what
result Lyon need. Lyon know now that if they lose, thy're out, and if they win, they're through. Nothing that happens in our match can affect that, it'll only determine who goes through with them if they win.
It'd be different if it was the Munich match under threat
from the weather, and possibly being played after the result of the other is known, because their result does affect Arsenal and Bayern. We'd know either that both teams need to win, or that both teams are already through. That'd be unfair if only by
potentially allowing both teams to rest players. But postponing
Spartak-Lyon affects nothing, and it'd be criminal to disrupt so many travelling fans weeks, and waste their money, by calling our match off unnecessarily.
