Second half/full-time report
(If coming straight to this page, see also first-half report )

Freddie Ljungberg started the half in place of Parlour, and he nearly got into a good position on the right of the box within a minute of the re-start. He went down, and there was very slight contact from Carboni, but the fact that Freddie appeared to start going down before he was tripped probably counted against his penalty claim.

Arsenal continued to have a lot more of the play than in the first half. Henry had the next good chance when both he and Wiltord beat the offside trap. Thierry carried the ball into the box on the left but Pellegrino came across well to put him off and the shot hit the side-netting.

Wiltord did well to win a free-kick after he and Henry were outnumbered on the break, but then blasted it at the wall from miles out.

At the other end, Keown made a crucial headed interception of a cross from our left, with Carew poised in space behind him.

Aimar was just getting ready to come on when Mendietta made a threatening run across the edge of the box and into it. But he waited too long before trying a shot and Dixon Keown and Adams converged to clear. There was a heart-stopping moment as Mendietta went down after contact with Keown, but the ref saw through it.

On 67 minutes Cole went an an amazing run down the left, skipping past several challenges before Angloma blocked him. Pires floated the free-kick straight to the keeper.

Moments later, Henry went on a mazy run into the box from the left, but his cross/shot beat everyone and bent back infield beyond the far post.

And before you knew it, Henry tricked his way through 2 defenders again on the left hand side of the box, but Angloma pulled him back and was extremely lucky not to get booked.

15 minutes to go, and Arsenal seemed to be controlling the match when it all went briefly but crucially pear-shaped. They got the ball forward and Cole forced a throw-in. It came back to Angloma who crossed towards the penalty spot. Carew got in front of Adams and hit a perfect header inside the far post. Although Seaman got a hand on it he couldn't stop it.

Almost immediately, Pires was replaced by Kanu.

We pushed everything forward, and won a couple of corners. One was plucked off Ljungberg's head by the keeper, right in front of goal. If only it had been Adams Vieira or Keown there.

Vieira was unlucky not be awarded a free-kick as a combination of defenders ended his powerful run right on the edge of the box. At the other end he might have been lucky not to have a penalty awarded against him, Carew going down after contact as Paddy shepherded the ball out for a goal-kick.

Kanu did brilliantly by the corner flag to keep the ball in and then to bring it along the goal-line, but he tried to thread it into the box through a space that wasn't really there. Canizarro came out well to good punch clear and stop Adams getting at a looping cross.

At the other end, Seaman did well to come a long way out of goal and stop a break. Then the ball was cleared out to Henry after an Arsenal cross. He took it down well but the shot was soft and straight at the keeper.

So, that's Europe over for another year. We have to admit we probably didn't quite deserve to get this far. But the team will have learned something from this competition and now just have to make sure of qualifying for it again.
