Arsenal (2) 3 - 2 (1) Schalke 04
Highbury, Wednesday 19th September 2001
UEFA Champs League, stage 1 match 2
Another nervy European night. Arsenal started badly,
and for the first half hour we looked
second best.
But on 33 minutes Ljungberg was lucky with a deflection after a good run,
his shot from the edge of the box coming off Waldoch to wrong-foot the keeper.
A few minutes later Henry scored a second after a great run down
the left from
Van Bronckhorst (with help from Wiltord). Bronco's square
ball found Henry on the edge of the box and he took time
to make space (he'd tried lots of first-time flicks before
that none of which worked) before passing the ball inside the near post.
Schalke pulled one back just before half-time thanks to a
dreadful error by Wiltord, trying a step-over dummy on the
edge of our box with Moller in close attendance. Moller
took the ball and when it was crossed beyond the far post
Van Hoogdalem fired a superb volley past Seaman.
We made amends 30 seconds after the restart. I was still getting my chips and didn't see it, but I found some guys who did see it
and they tell me Vieira won the penalty after Henry put him clear
onh the keeper. They also suggest there's a good chance it
wasn't a penalty. Shame. Henry took it and sent the keeper the wrong way.
Schalke had another period of dominance, and pulled another goal back with 15 minutes to go, with a superb diving header
from Mpenza from an equally superb cross from their left wing.
There were other chances at both ends. Most notably a
low-driven van Bronckhorst free-kick which the keeper spilled.
But he recovered to block Wiltord's close-range follow-up,
Keown couldn't get his foot on it and it camw wide to Wiltord
again who hit the side-netting.
At the other end the sub Asamoah hit the bar. Amazing
that he was on the bench. As with the England-Germany game,
he looked the biggest threat after he'd come on.
Although our makeshift defence looked shaky in that
opening spell, Gilles and Martin improved as the game went on.
But we were a bit lucky that the strikers Mpenza and Agali wasted
so many good chances. And with the first and third goals.
Still, they all count. And with Panathinaikos getting a
second win (2-0 at home to Mallorca) the win was even more
essential that it looked before the game. This could be a very tight group indeed.
Brilliant support from the Schalke fans.
