Panathinaikos (1) 1 - 0 (0) Arsenal
Athens, Wednesday 26th September 2001
UEFA "Champions" League stage 1 match 3
After having virtually no possession for the first
15 minutes Arsenal started to come into the game more.
And just when the threat from the home side seemed
to have abated, they scored a good goal.
The winger should never have been allowed so much space on
the left, but his cross was excellent and Karagounis's
diving header even better. It went across Seaman and inside
his right hand post, with the keeper maybe getting a slight touch as he dived.
We got into it more in the second half. Switching Pires
into the middle from the left wing was an
inspired/obvious move (take your
pick), and with the introduction of subs Jeffers Kanu and van Bronckhorst things started looking up. But Panathinaikos were
well organised and skilful, and the closest we got
were a great Henry volley from distance which the keeper
did well to save as it dipped low inside the post, and a
late chance for Jeffers from a corner - left unmarked beyond
the far post he placed a standing header woefully wide.
With Mallorca winning away at Schalke, Arsenal are
trailing in third place. See table. Looks like Schalke are virtually out of it, Panathinaikos are virtually through. The fact that
we have 2 home games left out of 3 is not the advantage we
might have hoped. Real Mallorca's visit to Highbury is also
their only remaining away game.
