| Mallorca thought they were out |

I suggested in my report
on Wednesday's game that I may have been the only person
screaming at the Arsenal players to take it easy at 2-1 up.
They were looking a bit frantic even though qualification was
very much in our own hands at 2-1, and I was worried that we'd concede a late equaliser which would put Real in the driving seat. Of course, when Henry scored in injury time I was very
glad they'd ignored me!
I thought I was the only one because everyone around me
seemed caught up in the panic, and several of them told me
to shut up. I presume that at least some of them thought
we needed a 2 goal win to be able to go through at all, rather
than just to go through that night.
Well, I've now heard from a couple of other people who were
yelling the same message. But the funny thing is, it's been
reported in the Spanish press (thanks go to Tony Porter for translating the Marca article) that the Mallorca players didn't realise the situation either.
At 2-1 down, they thought they were mathematically out of
the competition already, because they didn't realise that
the order would be decided on the head-to-head results
if we and they finished level on overall points (should
have been reading ArseWeb!).
Because of this, they were going hell-for-leather for an
equaliser. So their thinking that there was no difference
between 2-1 and 3-1 helped give us the chance to get that
3rd goal and put them out for definite.
