It's not entirely surprising that a couple of players
have been left at home for a rest. It's not a complete change of
squad for tomorrow's match, but given the injuries
we've already got the few that are staying behind are going to
cause some big changes in the line-up.
Henry and van Bronckhorst have not travelled (but are not injured). So presumably Matty Upson will continue at left back.
In addition, Vieira and Lauren are out with back and groin
problems respectively. So who plays at right back?
Up front, we think Jeffers is out still, and Bergkamp isn't travelling (although this would be a relatively easy one to get to by train/car, the match certainly isn't important enough).
So Henry's absence leaves Kanu and Wiltord.
There's a good chance that one or two of Luzhny, Inamaoto,
Stepanovs, Edu, and Pennant will play. Maybe even Stuart Taylor
(although we'd expect Wright to be given as much European
experience as possible, as soon as possible).
Schalke can only get into the UEFA cup by
beating us and hoping that Mallorca lose at home to
Panathinaikos. It seems unlikely, but good luck to them.
Schalke's terrific travelling fans deserve it.
update
It's now being reported that Ashley Cole is fit again
and has gone to Germany with the squad. Either Sol or
Gilles is expected to partner Upson in central defence,
with Luzhny at right back.
Edu is expected to get his European debut, and Inamoto
could get his first start.
