PSV Eindhoven (0) 0 - 4 (1) Arsenal

Champs League stage 1 match 2
Well, the changed
preparation tactic seemed to work, as Arsenal took the lead
in the first minute. UEFA have already confirmed that it was the fastest goal ever
in the Champions League. And we have already added it to
Arseweb's new Arsenal record-breakers page. Possibly the fastest
update in the history of Arseweb. The previous fastest was 20.12 seconds, by Del Piero against some team from Manchester. Gilberto's was timed at 20.07 seconds!
It was the first goal in a competitive
match for World Cup winner Gilberto (or "Sullivan",
as I like to call him), and came after Vogel lost the ball.
Vogel went on to lose
the ball every time it came near, sometimes appearing to get hold
of the ball simply in order to be able to lose it, until he
was subbed halfway through the first half.
Arsenal lost Keown in the first half too, with what looked like a
pulled hamstring. Cygan came on (Luzhny was on the bench too) and
did pretty well for the rest of the first half including one
significant clearance.
After the goal PSV had the better of the first half, with Arsenal
appearing to be doing a containing job. Let's not forget that
with the possible exception of Dortmund (ha!) this is the best
team we've played so far this season.
But Arsenal defended ok, and Seaman mad a good save with his feet.
Towards the end of the half Kevin Hofland came off with what looked
like a foot problem. He failed to reappear after the break, and
was replaced with Jan Vinegar of Hesselink. JVOH being a midfielder,
van Bommel moved back into defence.
At half time Dortmind are leading Auxerre 1-0 in the other game.
Arsenal managed to get more of a grip on the game in the second half, started to threaten more on the break, and on 65 minutes or so Freddie made it 2 with a brilliant run and finish.
He waited for the keeper to commit himself then hit it across him with the outside of his right foot.
Moments later Henry nearly created one for Gilberto. Then PSV
had one disallowed (wrongly) for offside.
Kanu replaced Bergkamp on 78 minutes, and shortly after provided the ball
which led to Thierry Henry's making it 3-0 after a wonderful
one-two. Again it was a dreadful loose pass from the Dutch team which started it off.
Freddie Ljungberg (obviously still not quite fit yet!) came off
for Kolo Toure towards the end.
Henry made it 4 right at the death, slicing through the defence with help from
Sylvain Wiltord. By this point it's just become so eeeeeasy.
All over. 4-0. Arsenal stay top of the table.
Dortmund won 2-1.
Keown will be out for a few weeks, but Cygan did very well
indeed alongside Sol Campbell for most of the game.
