PSV Eindhoven have banned 3 supporters who they have identified
as racially abusing Thierry Henry when Arsenal paid a visit
10 days ago.
This act is said to be pioneering in European football (according to this report). The length of the ban has not yet been stated by the Dutch club (so perhaps it's indefinite). The decision has
been taken by PSV independently of any investigation or punishment from UEFA, and cynics will see it as an attempt
to lessen such punishment.
It's easy, sadly, to be cynical, because everything we've seen
coming from PSV up till this point has
suggested that they were in a state of denial. Their spokesman
has been on the radio a few times here in the UK claiming
that the Henry incidents had been blown out of all proportion. It'll
be interesting to see if their claim is that these 3 banned
fans constituted the full extent of their racism problem.
Incidentally, Henry himself has been trying to clear up some
confusion caused as usual by over-excitable reporting. He did not say that he'd walk off the pitch if something like that happened again. He just said (something like) "imagine
what would happen if I walked off...", a pertinent point
since I think most of us would not just carry on regardless at our workplaces if subjected to similar treatment. And it's
particularly relevant if you consider the number of black players currently being fielded by the Gunners.
