UEFA are said to have confirmed that they will "review Martin Keown's conduct" in the sending off of Francesco Totti in last night's Champion's League match against Roma.
Roma boss Fabio Capello has described Keown as a great actor because there was clearly no elbow involved. To be frank, the replays of the incident do Keown no favours, as Totti's hand appears at most to brush Martin's face. But Keown has responded by saying that that brush caught him in the eye, and that's why he went down.
It will hopefully be enough to avoid UEFA reaching an unsporting conduct conclusion, which would lead to a ban for the Arsenal man. They'll be looking at the incident at their next Disciplinary and Appeals Board, which is scheduled for March 21st, and this is also when Totti will hear what kind of ban he'll get for the sending off.
That hearing is after next week's matches. So the good news is that Keown will be eligible to play next week in Valencia, but the bad news is that even if UEFA decide there was insufficient intent in Totti's actions to deserve the red card, he will definitely be banned for Roma's game against Ajax next week (an Ajax win would be the worst result for Arsenal).
Rupe adds...
According to The Times, Keown is already in the clear. UEFA are said to have looked at the referres's report on the incident, and that says that he judged there to have been intent on Totti's part, even if contact was minimal.
They say that this means that the disciplinary board will only
intervene if they feel that Totti deserves more than the 1 match automatic ban, or if they feel that Keown was guilty of provocation prior to the sending off incident (note that Totti appears to have accused him of that).
