UEFA Champs League, group stage, match 2
Lokomotiv Moscow and Arsenal drew 0-0 in the Champions League group game yesterday. Report on arsenal.com Robert Pirès spurned Arsenal's biggest chance, while Thierry Henry and Ray Parlour were among the players firing well from long range, only to see Lokomotiv's goalkeeper thwart them. At the other end, Jens Lehmann and Martin Keown impressed. Inter beat Dinamo Kiev 2-1 in the other game in the group.
Rupe adds...
Not much to add really. A decent display defensively but pretty poor going forward. The other result was probably the best we could hope for. If Inter run away with the league we're still in with a good chance of second, although to do that we will have to win a match for a change! A lot depends on the Dynamo games.
The big question for me has to be why were no substitutions on Tuesday? One can see the sense in not changing things defensively: we certainly couldn't aafford to lose and like I said, that side of things was ok. But up front Henry was not having his best day ever, Edu kept wasting the free-kicks, and let's be frank, Wiltord was having a mare (hardly saw him in the second half, wasted best chance of first half by being caught stupidly offside).
You have to feel for the attacking players on the bench. If this wasn't a chance for them to show what they can do, whatever will be? What harm could possibly have been done by taking off Wiltord (or Pires who looked knackered) and bringing some fresh legs on? How bad must Kanu be playing at the moment not to be thought worth a try in this situation? And what better chance will there be for Aliadiere and Bentley to show what they can do? Are the youngsters to be kept in resrve only for the League Cup again? Surely such a display of lack of confidence in them will only
do their prospects harm? I don't like to be critical of Le Boss, and perhaps there are injury issues which we're not aware of, but if there is a reason why no subs were used in Moscow, I'd really like to hear it (and my mailbox suggests I'm not the only one).
