Spain it is: Arsenal get Celta Vigo by Rupe
on 12/12/03 at 11:15
this is story 304 of 365 in this topic to date
Arsenal have been drawn against Celta Vigo in the last 16 of the Champions League. The first match will be played in Spain on Tuesday 24th Feb, and the second leg at Highbury on Wednesday 10th March.

Celta have done well to qualify for the last 16 in their first Champs League season. It took a late goal winning their last match away to AC Milan in the last match of the group. Admittedly, that was against a weakened Milan side (they had already won the group and half of them were on a plane to Japan), and Celta required Bruges to beat Ajax to send them through, but nonetheless they did only lose one match (1-0 away to Ajax) and drew 3 (see uefa.com), which ain't bad in that group. Celta are currently languishing near the bottom of La Liga.

One shouldn't be too confident of course, everyone's going to be fairly strong at this stage. But let's be honest, this is a pretty good draw.

As far as we can tell, Arsenal have never played Celta Vigo. We did let them have Nelson Vivas (for a year) and Silvinho, though. Silvinho's still there. Other players you may have heard of include Russian midfielder Alexander Mostovoi, Argentine keeper Cavallero, and a Brazilian midfielder called Edu. Contrary to what I wrote (in a bit of a rush) immediately after the draw, Benni McCarthy is not with them any more, they swapped him for former Villa man Savo Milosevic in the summer.

The draw in full:

Stuttgart vs Chelsea
Porto vs Man Utd
Real Sociedad vs Olympique Lyonnais
Celta Vigo vs Arsenal
Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid
Sparta Prague vs Milan
Deportivo La Coruna vs Juventus
Lokomotiv Moscow vs Monaco
Incidentally, the league match at home to Man Utd on the weekend following the first leg of theCL quarter-final (*crosses fingers*) has been moved from Sat urday March 27th to Sunday 28th (ko 5 past 4, live on Sky).
