Champs League opener: Freddie a doubt by Rupe

Once again Arsenal start the Champions League campaign on a high following an impressive start to the season. So, lest we forget, we've been here before. But although last season we'd had 4 wins and a draw, this season's 5 wins have been achieved by considerably more impressive performances and so inevitably the expectations are massive.

Freddie Ljungberg is our only new doubt for the match, with a back problem picked up against Fulham. In a press conference today Arsene Wenger said, "We have a slight problem with Freddie Ljungberg's back. He is in the squad and we'll assess him tomorrow. He should be OK." For a Premiership game one might expect him to give Pennant a start, but the importance of getting off to a good start in the Champs League will probably see Freddie start if at all possible.

The constant question this season looks like being who's going to start on the left and up front. Pires or Reyes? Reyes or Bergkamp?

Sol Campbell is still not ready to play, but he is back in training. "There is no real problem," says Wenger, "He just needs to practice a few more times with the first-team."

PSV had to sell a few players this summer, such as Dennis Rommedahl (Charlton) and Arjen Robben (Chelsea). Cocu is back at the club having been released by Barcelona, and back in the team having overcome a bout of pneumonia. But if the evidence of his Dutch performances this summer's is anything to go by, he's no longer the great player of a few years ago. They do still have (alleged) former Arsenal target Marc van Bommel, and centre-half Alex who's said to have a ferocious free-kick on him. Like Arsenal, they've had a good start to the season with 10 points from 4 matches.

PSV's only absentees are Kasper Bøgelund (thigh injury) and Remco van der Schaaf (ankle).

The ref for the game is Italian Domenica Messina, who was in charge of the Wales vs Northern Ireland game last week which featured 3 sendings off. "You have to be cautious as he looked like he sends off players easily," says Wenger.
