RESULT: Fiorentina 0 - 0 Arsenal
It's a sign of how far Arsenal has come since last year's disappointing campaign, that we can look at a 0-0 draw against Batistuta et al, and feel that we should have done better.
As the highlights will show, Fred Ljungberg missed a wonderful chance in the first half, when a wonderful square ball from Marc Overmars split the defence wide open, only for the Swede to tap casually towards the keeper as he dived for his far post.
And perhaps Kanu's oh-so-casual penalty technique isn't so smart after all, as he gave Toldo all the time in the world to stop a well deserved penalty which went far too close to the keeper. But it's becoming a worry that Dennis doesn't have a glowing track record from 12 yards, Suker missed one against Liverpool, and now Kanu's showing himself to be fallible... can anyone take a decent spot kick? It's bound to come in handy later in the competition!
But let's be optimistic, folks - one away game down, and one point scored is no disgrace. Barcelona left it late to turn a 1-0 defeat against AIK into a 2-1 win, but I suppose that's only to be expected.
The UEFA web site has done a good job of covering the game, including a nice minute-by-minute summary.
