Despite Wenger's warning
against complacency, I have to admit that I'm struggling to get excited by the prospect of tonight's
match, the second leg of a Champs League qualifier, which we
lead by 3 goals to nil from the away leg 2 weeks ago. Ok, so the
prospect of seeing the new ground floodlit for the first time
is appealing, but as far as the football's concerned it could
be a dull one. Where Manchester United might be expected to
relax and score a hatful as a result, Arsenal have a tendency to
do no more than necessary.
I hope I'm wrong, because we could do with a confidence boost
following the disappointing draw with Villa on Saturday. But the
main thing is that I'm not wrong the other way and don't see us
concede an early goal and get nervous enough to let the whole tie slip.
Jens Lehmann has a minor knee problem and looks set to be replaced
by Manuel Almunia, which might well have happened anyway. Jose Antonio Reyes
and Tomas Rosicky both have groin complaints, although there have been
suggestions (from the player) that the latter has recovered more quickly
than anticipated and could be ok to play (apparently he trained on
Sunday with no ill-effects). Freddie Ljungberg was hurried back
early from injury on Saturday and could well be rested, so perhaps
it's time for Theo Walcott to start a game.
In defence Ashley Cole is still being left out, and if we do
see him in an Arsenal shirt again it's not going to be before the
end of the transfer window, unless he chooses to commit his future
(or the next year of it at least) to the club. Phillipe_Senderos
and Gael Clichy are both still out so the defence isn't likely to
differ much from Saturday's, which wouldn't do Johan Djourou and
Justin Hoyte any harm. If we don't make the defensive signing
that Wenger is hoping for, then these youngsters could be seeing a
lot of action this year. But Matthieu_Flamini might come in for
Hoyte. Abou Diaby and Lauren are also both injured.
Dinamo_Zagreb will be without their main man, experienced defender
Jens Nowotny.
The draw for the group stage is tomorrow afternoon. So long as we're in
it, excitement in tonight's match is a secondary concern. |
