Nantes (1) 3 - 3 (3) Arsenal
La Beaujoire-Louis Fonteneau stadium, Nantes
Thursday 9th December 1999
UEFA Cup 3rd round 2nd leg
Taking a 3 goal lead from the first leg, it's perhaps
not surprising that Arsenal are through to the 4th round.
But Sibierski opened the scoring tonight with a cracking free-kick, and then Da Rocha missed an open goal that would
have brought it back to 3-2 and all to play for.
Grimandi levelled with his second of the week, this one
pretty easy after Vieira had set him up, and with the away
goal secured that was that. Except for the bit-of-a-goal-fest
which followed.
Henry displayed his new-found confidence again by volleying
home a first-time bullet after Kanu's scoop over the top
had set him up, and on the stroke of half-time Overmars
made it 3 after a classy pass from Petit.
Arsenal went into second gear for the second half. And, to be fair, Nantes showed spirit to bring the game back their way.
If anything they might have deserved to edge it on the night.
As it was they pulled it back to 3-3 with another great strike from Sibierski and an individual effort from Vahirua.
More detailed reports to follow.
