Reuters are reporting that 'OnDigital', the UK's terrestrial digital TV broadcaster, will be playing a part in the broadcast of Champions League games in a 4-year deal starting next year (1999-2000).
ITV will continue to show live games featuring British clubs on a Wednesday, but it looks like ITV2 - currently only available via the OnDigital set-top box or some Cable TV franchises, and NOT via Sky - will show a different game live at the same time, probably a big-name glamour tie between two non-British sides. With the CL expanding to 32 teams, and 2 days of competition per round, ITV2 will also have a live game on a Tuesday night.
You can expect that commercial pressure will mean one English club plays on a Wednesday, and one on a Tuesday. And if we assume that ManU will be one of the English entrants, their pulling power will probably mean they get the 'nationwide' slot on a Wednesday - meaning Arsenal (or whoever) will probably get moved to the 'minority' slot on a Tuesday.
NOTE: initial reports were that the games would be on Thursdays rather than Tuesdays. |
