Robert Pires is going to miss the semi-final on Sunday. He's got an ankle problem which kept him out of the recent internationals, as well as the disappointing trip to Villa. The
hope is that by resting him on Sunday, he'll be available for
the big league match at home to Man Utd next Wednesday.
The big question-mark is in central defence, where Pascal Cygan is suspended. Sol Campbell can play like 2 men, of course, but it'd still be good to have someone alongside him. Martin Keown
has not yet been ruled out: he should be back soon but earlier in the week the news was that he hadn't returned to full training yet so the chances are that he'll also be rested with Wednesday in mind. The alternatives would seem to be Igors Stepanovs or Oleg Luzhny. Oleg is back in contention but while
his performances at right back this year have been good, we're yet to be convinced by him as a centre back. Apparently he'd make a good Prime Minister though! According to this from the Standard he's something of a national icon in the Ukraine... "If only Luzhny was our president as well as our nation's football captain then we'd have a politician we could truly trust", says a local radio station.
Hopefully though, the defence will still have a stronger look to it than of late because Ashley Cole is expected to make his first start since his hernia op.
Up front it would not be surprising to see Wenger use the squad to the full, again with Wednesday in mind and in line with
previous FA Cup teams. Jeffers and Wiltord up front is a distinct possibility, with Dennis and Thierry on the bench as
back-up.
In goal, David Seaman could be back to make his 1000th professional appearance but Le Boss might stick with Taylor
for this one and bring Seaman straight into the team for
Man Utd.
Jermaine Pennant is cup-tied, having played in the competition for fellow semi-finalists Watford earlier in the season (he had a big hand in the goal that knocked the Baggies out, and got man of the match).
See this story from earlier in the week for Blades team news. To update it: we can confirm that Windass and Morrison are cup-tied as is Marcel Cas. Phil Jagielka is rated 60-40, while Rob Kozluk and John Curtis are 50-50, which added to Ben Doane's injury could leave Neil Warnock struggling to put a defence together.
Blades striker and Arsenal fan Steve Kabba seems to have given up on getting to the final, and is instead focussing his attention on getting hold of Thierry Henry's shirt. But he says that several of his team-mates are keen to swap jerseys with the Arsenal striker so he might end up spending the last few minutes of the game just following Thierry around. We reckon that might involve hanging around the Arsenal bench, Steve!
