According to Sportserver.com,
Kanu is one of 5 top Nigerian players who have asked not
to be selected for the next World Cup qualifier, a do-or-die
clash against table-topping Liberia on May 5th.
The other players are West, Oliseh,
Finidi and Okocha, quite a line-up. An NFA spkesman is
quoted as saying that the news came through the coach, and
that the players gave no reason.
An anonymous NFA person did say however that they suspect
a form of blackmail is in operation. The players in question are thought to be big supporters of under-fire coach Jo Bonfrere,
and the NFA are meeting to discuss his future with them thsi Thursday.
Incidentally, or perhaps not, Arsenal are at home to Leeds United on May 5th, in what is arguably our hardest remaining Premiership game (even though it comes in the weekend between their 2 champs league semi-final legs).
See also this AllAfrica.com page for more details of the NFA's
tortuous politics, and of course previous items in this topic for loads more background.
