Cole called up, but no Seaman by Rupe

Three Arsenal players have been named in Sven Goran Eriksson's squad for the England friendly against Itlay next week.

It's no surprise to see Sol Campbell there, given his excellent Arsenal form of late. But it was widely expected that Ashley Cole would be left out, having only returned to the Arsenal team today. Perhaps his inclusion is a reflection of the fact that there aren't that many options on the left for Eriksson to look at.

Richard Wright's inclusion is not a surprise in itself, but Seaman's superb and improving form since his return from injury must be making Eriksson think of him as number one choice for the number 1 shirt in Japan.

Eriksson has said that H's exclusion is just to enable him to look at other players, and presumably he's also mindful of the importance of keeping Seaman fit. But not so much Ashley Cole, it would seem?

Of course, it's likely that these selectinos were made after consultation with Arsene Wenger et al.

The full squad for Wednesday's match at Elland Rd is as follows:

Campbell, Cole, Wright (Arsenal),
Beckham, Butt, Neville, Neville, Scholes (Man Utd),
Ferdinand, Fowler, Martyn, Mills (Leeds),
Gerrard, Heskey, Owen (Liverpool),
Cole, James, Sinclair (West Ham United). Ehiogu, Southgate (Middlesbrough),
King, Sheringham (Tottenham),
Vassell (Villa),
Hargreaves (Bayern Munich),
Lampard (Chelsea),
Dyer (Newcastle),
Bridge (Southampton),
