England and France played out a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane on Friday in the first leg of their UEFA U21 Championship qualifier play-off, but
the result shouldn't be the thing on Arsenal fans' minds right now. Gael Clichy
came off injured and misses the second leg in France on Tuesday.
We don't know at this stage what the extent of Clichy's problem is [see below for update],
and probably won't until he returns to Arsenal for assessment. But
with Ashley Cole not expected back for another 2 weeks after the
international break (see official
Arsenal injury news), this could well leave us without a proper left back for
Premiership games against Wigan and Blackburn as well as cup games against Thun
and Reading (and that's assuming that the Cole prognosis isn't over-optimistic).
Justin Hoyte has been impressing at left-back at Sunderland (showing himself
to be a very versatile defender, having done well for us filling in at centre-back in the past
as well as in his normal right back position). But Hoyte is loaned to Sunderland for the whole season
and there's no prospect of bringing him back. Sebastian Larsson has played
(out of position) at left back for us before (in his first team debut, a
League Cup win over Man City). Another possibility would be to use Emmanuel Eboue (maybe
switching Lauren to the left). But let's not forget that Pascal Cygan has
been used as left-back cover before, and his greater experience could swing the
decision his way.
The goals on Friday were scored by Anthony Le Tallec and Darren Ambrose. See UEFA report.
Rupe adds...
It looks like Clichy, like Ashley, has a broken foot. He's expected to be out for 4 months or so. Let's hope Ash is back sooner rather than later! |
