The efforts of Trinidad and Tobago coach Leo Beenhacker to get FIFA to allow him to pick Justin Hoyte for his World Cup squad appear to have been scuppered.
There's no news on his appeal - asking FIFA to bend the rule that says players can only switch nationality if they do it before the age of 21. It's Hoyte himself who's thrown a spanner in the works by stating that he wouldn't accept such a place anyway.
Hoyte, born in East London but with family links to TnT, has represented England at U21 level, and has decided that he'd prefer to take his chances at getting into their senior squad at some point, rather than jump at the chance for one World Cup and maybe never another. His performances so far, filling in for us last season both at right back and centre back, and playing on both defensive flanks on loan at Sunderland this season, have been good enough to suggest that he's right.
"I've read about Trinidad and Tobago looking into the possibility of calling up several players in the Premiership, including myself."
"It's flattering, of course, and the chance of playing in a World Cup would be great. But for the moment I plan to concentrate purely on my England career and I'm hoping that one day I'll be playing for England in a World Cup."
"I've played for England at Under-17, 18, 19 and Under-21 levels and I've still got ambitions to play in the senior squad."
"That has been my dream since I was a youngster and I'm not giving up on that."
"I'm still young, just 22, and one day I'm hoping to be good enough to play for England and pull on the three lions shirt at the ultimate level."
From Arsenal's point of view, it's good news because it'd be another player that we'd lose for long periods at international times. That's assuming that he can break into Wenger's thinking on his return. Good as he is, it's looking less likely with the emergence this season of Emmanuel Eboue and Kerrea Gilbert as undersudies to Lauren. Having said that, if Hoyte's turning into a left-back, there's still a possibility that we'll need another one of them (we certainly haven't had enough this season)>
