Nutty rumour for West Ham job by Rupe
on 28/8/03 at 02:03
this is story 167 of 180 in this topic to date
According to The Independent, Nigel Winterburn of all people is the new favourite to land the West Ham manager's job. They report that "a leading bookmaker" has suspended betting on the appointment, after reducing Nigel's odds from 33-1 to 7-2.

Crazy? Well, yes. On the official Irons site he says it's all news to him.

"They always throw in a strange name to keep things going. I don't know anything about it, although my mum did have a large bet on me this morning saying she wanted me to get the job! But seriously, I didn't even know my name had been linked and couldn't say what it is all about - perhaps it is a publicity stunt. I have got to admit it is flattering, but whether they would want someone with no managerial skills remains to be seen - you will have to ask Terence Brown! I have not applied, and I have always said at this stage I would not go into not management - but who knows?"

Former model Iaiaian Dowie looks to be the favourite among the more realistic suggestions (but who knows?). The long list of other alleged possibilities includes one Tony Adams.

To be fair to the Indy, they do point out that Winterburn would be a surprising choice, since he accused the club's board of "doing the dirty" on Roeder by dismissing him.

A true Arsenal legend, and a valuable player to West Ham in his latter days, Winterburn retired from playing in July. He put in an entertaining appearance on Soccer AM at the weekend.
