Anyone wondering what Christopher Wreh's up to now? Well the big news of the week is that he's just signed for United Counties League side Buckingham Town.
Chris scored 1 and created 2 more for the Robins as they won 4-2 in an pre-preliminary round FA Cup match against Ryman League div 3 Kingsbury Town on Saturday. If they beat Harlow in the preliminary round this weekend they will equal their best-ever performance of reaching the first round.
So the fall from stardom of the former Arsenal and Monaco striker continues. After becoming surplus to requirements at Highbury he had loan spells at Birmingham, Den Bosch, and AEK Athens (quite succesful from the sound of it).
Since leaving Arsenal in 2000 he's been to Al-Hilal, and then, 3 years ago, Bournemouth. Apparently St Mirren were next, where he didn't play a game, and then
in April of last year it was Bishop's Stortford.
Perhaps a clue to his fall is in that last link, where Bishop's Stortford boss Martin Hayes implies that Chris is a touch unreliable. From the sounds of report of
the game at the weekend though, he's not a bad player still.
It's only a few years since he was scoring the winning goal for us in the FA Cup semi-final in Wenger's first double season, and helping us to the league the same year by scoring the goals in a couple of important 1-0 wins.
A sometimes too-much maligned player, Wreh was in my mind like a value-for-money version of Sylvain Wiltord. And unlike Wiltord, he caught the imagination of the crowd who gave him a chant or two of his own. No-one ever called him World Class (although he did alright for Liberia), but he did a job when we needed him to.
"Chris Wreh, Chris Wreh" to the tune of the Stingray theme was good, but "We're riding along on a Christopher Wreh" was possibly Highbury's greatest lyrical moment. We hope that the Robins fans will be resurrecting such songs, and we wish Chris all the best.
