Arsenal (1) 3 - 1 (1) Everton
Highbury, Tuesday 9th November 2004
League Cup, 4th round
Arsenal:
Almunia
Hoyte Senderos Djourou Karbassyoon
Pennant Flamini Edu (Larsson 65) Smith (Quincy 21)
Van Persie Lupoli (Cregg 89)
(thatnsk to Brian Dawes for helping out with the formation)
I'm going to have to take a break more often if this is what happens. Arsenal seem to have bounced back with 2 great wins, starting with this one by the youngsters.
With Cygan and Cesc out, and Edu's involvement curtailed by injury, this was an even "weaker" side that the one that beat Man City. And unlike City, in-form Everton were using their first choice Premiership team (only with ex-Gunner Richard Wright in goal for Nigel Martyn).
Everton started strongly and took the lead on 8 minutes when Thomas Gravesen's free-kick beat Manuel Almunia thanks to a deflection off the boot of Jermaine Pennant. But Arsenal's heads didn't go down and had chances through a van Persie free kick and a great run from Lupoli that ended with a disappointing shot straight at Wright. Senderos had the ball taken off him in his own box by McFadden but recovered well to rob it back.
Arsenal were forced to bring Quincy on for Ryan Smith halfway through the first half, and the Dutch forward had an immediate impact. First he skipped through themiddle of the defence and forced Wright into a good save, but moments later he'd brought Arsenal level with a shot from the left that nutmegged Yobo before beating Wright, the chance having been created by a great pass from Pennant.
Yobo recovered to make a good interception soon after, otherwise Lupoli would surely have finished the chance created by van Persie's pass. With the first half drawing to a close it was all Arsenal, with both Dutchmen Quincy and van Persie going close. But then at the death we got lucky when Pistone beat Almunia near the edge of the box and clipped the ball goalwards, only to see it come off the post and tricked along the line before Djourou managed to get over and hook it clear.
7 minutes after the break Arsenal took the lead in typical fashion. Quincy powered his way skilfully past Gravesen and Stubbs, then fed van Persie who chose not glory for himself but an easy chance for his teammate. Lupoli made no mistake from van Persie's pass.
Wright did well to rush out of goal to stop Lupoli on 62, after another great ball from Pennant (playing a stormer, again), then Yobo denied us a chance by cutting out a fine cross by Flamini.
Larsson came on for Edu, and Everton nearly equalised through their own sub Nick Chadwick. But Almunia did well to nick the ball off his toe. Up the other end van Persie forced another fine save from Wrighty with another free-kick. And with 6 minutes to go Lupoli fired home the 3rd and clinching goal, striking a Quincy cross from the edge of the box.
The 10 outfield players that finished the match had an average age of less than 20. They've been rewarded with a trip to Old Trafford!
