As far as we can tell, this has not been confirmed by either Arsenal or Fulham, but today's papers are reporting that Arsene Wenger has decided not to recall Moritz Volz from his loan spell with the Cottagers.
We and many others had been thinking that the best way to deal with Lauren's forthcoming 4 game ban would be to bring back a highly rated young player who has been getting a lot of valuable premiership experience recently.
But if the papers are to be believed, Wenger intends to use Pascal Cugan instead. If so, he will have a difficult choice between playing Cygan out of position at right back (as he did earlier in the season when, to be fair, Pascal did quiet well), or move Kolo Toure there and putting Cygan alongside Campbell. I tend to think that the former would be the better option, having seen both Kolo and Pascal play in both roles, I'm not convinced that Kolo is any more of a natural right back than Pascal. So why not keep a man who has arguably been our best player so far this season, in the role which he has so quickly made his own?
Of course, it could be argued that while using Cygan in this way would be a gamble, bringing Volz back would be a gamble too.
But, personally, it'd be nice to see us gambling on a promising youngster for a change.

Arsenal have confirmed (on the official site) that Volz is not to be recalled. They don't say what the plan is to be for Lauren's absence, but they do reveal that he is now injured and would be missing the next few weeks anyway. That means he's out not only for the domestic games which the suspension applies to, but also the next Champs League game in Milan. |
