No big surprise: Jens Lehmann and Kevin Phillips have both been charged with "improper conduct" following the silliness during and after the win at St Mary's a couple of weeks ago. They both have till January 23rd to respond.
It's hard to see how Lehmann will avoid a ban. Given that Phillips has been charged there doesn't seem all that much point in pointing out the provocation either, although I imagine that Arsenal will go along to allege that the foot-stamping wasn't the only thing Phillips did to get him annoyed. But Lehmann did deliberately chuck the ball at the Saints man, and it's hard to see how the German keeper's bizarre post match comments ("I don't have a problem with communication but get frustrated by my lack of communication with the ref") will help either. Hopefully someone has now pointed out to Lehmann that if he hadn't lost his rag after the final whistle, Phillips would have been charged for the stamp and Lehmann (and Arsenal) could have been the good guys. But maybe he doesn't want to be a good guy. Seems to be fitting in well...
As for Phillips, the stamp looked pretty clear, but it's a trifle harder to prove intend than in Lehmann's case. Not that we care, he won't miss an Arsenal match as a result.
One match bans all round, probably. |
