The last of the famous Arsenal defence of the Graham era is leaving.
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Martin Keown is due to leave Highbury at the end of the season. His last games will be the Leicester match this afternoon and his testimonial on Monday.
Keown is out of contract in the summer, and Wenger says "I think that Martin is finished here as a player and, if he wants to go on and play - as I think he will - he will certainly sign somewhere else. Later, he will certainly be a coach. I think it will be here. He has two more years to offer as a player first."
38 year old Keown joined as a trainee in 1982, had brief spells at Villa and Everton, but in 1993 he returned to the club he supported as a boy. Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp has said that he'd sign Keown, but there are likely to be other Premiership contenders including the clubs coming up from the first division, as well as some that are still in it. It's possible that what a club can offer in terms of getting his coaching career started will be a factor in his decision. |
