Arsenal's crucial midfield signing by Rupe

Gilberto has signed a new long-term deal with Arsenal, which will keep him with us till 2009. It's a terrific signing, and comes hot on the heels of a superb performance against Everton.

Gilberto signed in the summer of 2002 following the World Cup, and had entered the last year of his contract. The importance of the man was underlined (or revealed, such is the unspectacular nature of his role) last season when he was absent for a long time with a back problem. I have to admit that I wasn't too sure about him myself for a good while. Now that Vieira's gone, and his partners in central midfield are the far less experienced Cesc and Flamini, that importance has grown massively.

Some people say we're still looking for a world class and experienced midfielder to replace Vieira. But I suspect that what's in Wenger's mind is not so much that the players we have aren't up to the job, but more that none of them would be able to fill Gilberto's boots if we lose him again for any length of time.

The absence of Vieira will bring Gilberto's imprtance into better focus for all, so it was particularly important to get him to sign this extension before other clubs started sniffing around. Preumably the new deal reflects his greater responsibility. Gilberto says we can still win the league. Good for him.

Vieira, meanwhile, struck the only goal for Juve yesterday to give them a lucky (according to boss Fabio Capello) 1-0 win over Udinese, and maintain their 100% record for the season.
