Jesus and other (transfer) fictions by Rupe

We don't really want to be adding any weight to these stories but the stories are out there so we'll pass them on...

Arsenal have been said to be paying close attention to a couple of players at Jose Reyes' old club Sevilla. 18 year old midfielder Jesus Navas is a Spanish U21 international, and reports from Spain suggest that Arsenal would like to sign him in the January transfer window but then let him stay at Sevilla for the rest of the season.

The other player being mentioned is another Spanish U21 player Sergio Ramos. The 18 year-old right-back has broken into Sevilla's first team this season, and is quoted as saying, "I am proud that great clubs like Arsenal pay attention to me".

Of course, Arsenal like many clubs have people watching young players all over Europe and beyond. I dare say the Ramos story is every bit as authentic as the Navas one, but it doesn't provide for such good headlines as "Wenger turns to Jesus" and so on. Just a shame he's not a goalkeeper (but when Wenger signs a player you never know what position he's going to end up in).

Inevitably, the good Premiership form of Norwich keeper Robert Green has led to rumours about his future. With Tim Howard not looking any less dodgy than before, Man United are the natural target for the rumour-merchants. And of course, if they're interested then Arsenal are interested in a bidding war. Some sources even suggest that Wenger has lost confidence in Lehmann, but it's hard to see any evidence (or reason) for that.

No Spanish clubs involved in the fantasy auction for Green, as yet, but it's Barcelona who we're said to be in competition with for the services of Bulgarian striker Valeri Bojinov. The 18 year old Lecce player, who was discovered by them in the Maltese league, is expected to leave for a bigger club at the end of the season.

Eagle-eyed readers may notice that most of the above stories are covered in greatest and least sceptical depth by one site. Is "Fans FC" the new TeamTalk?

Rupe adds...
As if by magic, Sergio Ramos has signed a new comtract with Sevilla, keeping him there till 2008. Sevilla director Ramon Rodriguez says, "I'm happy because he is a home-grown player with an enormous future, and we have been working on the new contract for some time."

The questions on our minds are: did the story linking Ramos with Arsenal help him get a better deal? Does the the story linking him with Arsenal help make this signing look more of a result for Sevilla (to their fans)? Did the story linking him with Arsenal actually have anything to do with Arsenal, at all?

Rupe adds...
And now the "Eastern European Wayne Rooney" Boijnov says he's happy to stay at Lecce. "I dream of the survival of Lecce and then to play with Bulgaria in the World Cup in Germany."
