The long-anticipated move to Arsenal of Ivory Coast defender Emmanuel Eboue has now been finalised.
The versatile 21 year old clearly made a good impression when he came over to trial at the club in the summer (when he played in 6 friendlies for the club, and is said to have agreed the move back in November, and has been training with the Arsenal squad since January 1st. He joins from our Belgian little sister club Beveren. A statement on their website says that Arsenal turned their attention back to Eboue when the attempt to sign Hatem Trabelski failed.
Eboue joins fellow countryman Kolo Toure at Arsenal, and like Toure he can play in a number of positions. He has normally played at centre-back but can play at right back or in midfield too. And up front too, no doubt, if Kolo's example is anything to go by. I wonder if he's any good in goal. The thing about this kind of signing is you never know where Wenger's going to end up playing them. Many reports will no doubt laud him as a potential replacement for Lauren, what with his contract issues. But maybe that's just what Wenger wants us to think. Kolo played all over the place before settling at centre back (which was the role he'd always thought was his forte) and Lauren joined as a midfielder and still plays there for his country. Watch this space, and get your thinking caps on because we need a new rhyme for "porno flick".
Eboue's name had already appeared on the official site's list, but with no info. They now have this factfile. There's also this article confirming the signing, which interestingly and in contrast to the Beveren site describes him as primarily a right-back. Interesting. It also says that he's available for selection immediately and could even feature in the FA Cup game on Sunday.
