The move for 22 year old Uruguayan keeper Sebastian Viera has been called off, but the reasons are not quite clear. On the official site, M. Wenger says just that "We could not find an agreement in the end" but the fact that he wasn't coming had been reported in the press earlier in the week along with the suggestion that the player had failed a medical.
From what we've heard, it seems a shame. Viera is already an established international at a young age for a keeper, with plenty of time to improve further. Perhaps, understandably, he wasn't going to be happy with playing 2nd or 3rd fiddle. But if he's as good as he was being cracked up to be then he might not have had to do so for long.
Having said that, there are also rumours that he wasn't signed, at least partly, because he's tiny.
Wenger says he's still looking for another keeper. You could say that we've lost 2 this summer (Stack, Taylor), but both had been off on loan previously anyway. We thought we'd gained one in young Italian Vito Mannone, who shared the duties with reserve keeper Mark Howard in some pre-season games. His name was on the official site's first team squad list for a while but has now disappeared. Anyone know what happened there?
Anyway, Manuel Almunia has recovered sufficiently from his broken finger to return to training, and should be in the squad for the Newcastle game. One has to assume, given his continuing interest in a new signing in the position, that Wenger has decided that Almunia isn't good enough to take over from Lehmann in the long run.
