Soccernet claims that Arsenal have agreed a £3.5million deal
to buy Davor Suker. Suker has a proven strike record with
Croatia and at club level. He was third in FIFA's World Player
of the Year poll last year (largely on the strength of an
good World Cup), but
Arsenal fans will particularly enjoy casting their minds back to
the way he made Peter Schmeichel look like an idiot during Euro96.
More recently Suker has however gained something of a reputation as a troublemaker
at Real, and it was said that other English teams were interested
but put off by absurd wage demands (£40000/week rings
a bell). These are both things that
one would expect to be off-putting to Arsenal, so we'll wait
and see....
It's worth noting that the Suker deal is definitely not
linked in with Anelka's transfer, and that today's Marca
(Spanish sports daily) reckons Suker looks likely to move to
the US. In Italy, Gazzetto dello Sport reckon he's going to
Kiev.
Addendum: there are now reports saying that Suker has signed for Arsenal
(eg TeamTalk, Football365, SportingLife) but no quotes from Arsenal or indications
as to where this story comes from.
