According to Norwegian U21 international midfielder John Arne Riise, both Arsenal and Manchester United are monitoring his progress (see Opta soccer). He's 20 now, and has been with Monaco since he was 17. He made 7 appearances (3 as sub) last season, but has been
playign more this season and could break into the Norwegian squad for Euro2000. Nice to see us being linked with a central
midfielder for once rather than a striker or keeper, as cover is a bit light in that department since
Garde and Vivas left. Basically, there's Grimandi which is
all very well but he's often needed at the back too. (If only
we had 11 Gilles Grimandis! Who thought we'd be saying that at the start of this season?!).
Speaking of dodgy striker links, Opta Soccer also say that
Arsenal are "renewing their interest" in Patrick Kluivert. This is "according to reports", but they don't say
whose reports, or anything else new. Perhaps they mean
this report (TeamTalk's
latest rediscovery of the Arsenal-Kluivert connection).
Meanwhile, The Times yesterday suggested that Arsenal are
watching Jose Vigidal, a defensive midfielder from
Sporting Lisbon. Vidigal is 26, a former U21 international,
and is on the verge of breaking into the full Portuguese squad.
They actually quote Arsenal chief scout Steve Rowley, "We will be going over to take another look at him". Must be true, then. But The Times don't understand why we'd be looking for
a midfielder. ArseWeb reckons when Dennis, Marc, Davor and Kanu
are all back it'll all come clear. Especially when Vieira and/or
Petit are suspended and/or injured again....
Anyway, for what it's worth, I expect no signings till the summer. And then only one or two: cover for Overmars, maybe a
central or right-sided defender, and obviously replacements for any departing players. |
