We've had many worried emails from Gooners who have heard the
stories coming out of Japan. A newspaper, the Asahi Shinbum,
had reported that current Japan coach Phillipe Troussier was set to
be ousted in favour of his compatriot, our own Arsène Wenger. Troussier has failed to impress in his 19-month
stint and his contract is up in June. With 2 years to go till the World Cup when, as hosts, Japan will be particularly keen
to be able to compete, the Japanese FA were said to be getting
twitchy. The reports suggested that they were prepared to
break the bank to sign Wenger in the summer.
Since there have been rumours about the Japan job since before
Wenger even arrived in London, mostly appearing to be the result of wishful thinking on the parts of the Japanese FA or their press, we didn't think there was much to the latest story.
And now JFA supremo Shunichiro Okano has officially denied
the reports. "The association is currently considering whether to renew a contract with
coach Troussier but we have yet to reach any conclusion". It's
said that such a conclusion will be reached at a meeting at the end of May. And when asked if they were in talks with the
Arsenal boss, Okano said "No, we're not."
On Radio 5 live last night, Wenger reiterated that he has 2 years
on his contract at Arsenal, that he loves it here, and intends to
stay at least that long. He also said that he doesn't know what'll
happen after that, but we understand that Arsenal will be
making moves to try to extend his contract sooner rather than later.
Wenger's going nowhere, of course. But if they did ask,
who could blame them for trying?
