Another "don't hold your breath" story here, since the news
comes exclusively from the other club. But the stories include
quotes from the player (although not mentioning his destination)
as well as from club directors saying that they didn't want to sell but the price is right. So you never know....
Reports in Brasil suggest that Arsenal have signed midfielder
Edu from Corinthians, for $9million (US).
Edu (full name Eduardo Caesar Daud Gaspar) is 22, and has been at the club since he was 5. Understandably, he has been quoted as saying that he's sad
to be leaving. Less understandably, he appears to have said that
he didn't even talk to Arsenal.
Edu has been described as hard working, creative and with a good
attitude. Much like his former (and maybe future) club-mate
Silvinho who we signed from Corinthians last year. And one very good
sign is that the Corinthians supporters are said to be up in arms about Arsenal signing him. In fact 50 supporters invaded the training ground to have a go at the directors when the news broke. The news "came like a bomb" and overshadowed the first training session of their new coach (although they have made a signing too).
It does appear however that Edu was expected to sign for a
German club, a deal that is said to have fallen through before
the Aresnal deal came along. So it is far from impossible that
all this is just a selling club's ploy to raise interest. Arsenal
have not confirmed their interest, but the story is that he will be
having a medical later this week and it would be normal for the club to wait till then.
See the news page from this Corinthians site, or
this Brasilian paper. The
official Corinthians site appears to have gone walkies.
We've got a couple of pictures of Edu here and here.
By the way, don't bother trying to search the internet for this
guy's name!
(thanks to Emerson in Brasil for the first tip-off, Marc for more info, and Paul for the piccies)
