Marc Overmars continues to provide the headline writers
with subject-matter, although we must stress that as far as
we're aware he still has said nothing himself to suggest that he's leaving Arsenal.
Today's stories are:
- He's not keen on Italian football (PlanetFootball) because he wouldn't get the freedom to run
that he's found in England. He also says he didn't used to get that freedom in Holland, either.
- Roma and Lazio lead the chase (SoccerAge). That's Roma and Lazio of Rome, Italy.
but best of all
- Arsenal have offered Overmars in part-exchange for Luis Figo of Barcelona. This comes from SoccerFlash who are bucking the trend by linking Marcy with Barcelona again in the post van Gaal era.
Marc's comments about Italian football, if one were to
believe them, would appear to swing things back in favour of Spain.
Figo has been saying that he'd like to play in the Premiership one day. Funny how everyone seeems to say that. In Figo's case he may have been encouraged by his recent experience of playing against Premiership players, but no doubt someone will point out to him that not everyone playing in the Premiership is English.
So don't get too excited about the Figo element of the story. Basically if Barca sell him Figo to anyone, they'll probably get enough money to make us an unrefusable offer for any of our players. They won't need to worry about part-exchanges!
Figo's agent, incidentally, has
apparently said that they won't be talking to any new clubs until the
beginning of the club chairman electoral campaign in July.
Anyone understand this? Surely if you want to minimise disruption you'd either get it over with before the campaign, or wait till
after the election.
Still, you never know. It would certainly be exciting to see Figo at Highbury, linking up with our other summer signings: Zidane, Ronaldo, Pele and Puskas.
The Overmars-Figo swap idea was first mooted back in April,
completely spuriously and with no foundation whatsoever,
by this scurrilous publication
Those Figo quotes:
"I like attacking football and I would love to play in English football"
"It is my favourite league. I like the way it is played, especially the atmosphere, and I love London as a city."
Mrs Figo adds: "There's nowhere
better in the world. Luis loves London and has been there many times. The climate is cold and
grey, but I'm used to that as I'm Swedish!"
But Mr Figo says: "I've got four years on my contract and I intend to stay at Barcelona, after that,
in the future, I don't know."
