Not that he is a bad player, but too much of a nice guy and not enough of a warrior : Aimé Jacquet, France' s coach during the WC98 said then of him he must harden his game. He is also used to disappear when the game goes not his way.
A gifted and versatile player, he started his professional career for Metz on the left handside of the midfield (which is his preferred position) although being nothing of an out-and-out-winger. He then failed to impress when he was given the playmaker role at Marseille and/or asked to play behind the front two and although he reads well the game he is definitely not a born leader. Guy Roux, AJ Auxerre former boss and one of the shrewdiest man in French footy said of him he is one of the best crosser of the ball, if not the best.
Pires could be an other Arsène' s shrewd signing if he can cope with the Premiership pace and requirement. Like Bergy, MO11 or Kanu, he had a torrid time before he joined THOF. It' s up to him to show the footy world (and us) he has character.
A source close to LeBrat informed us last week he took his decision to join Arsenal rather than Madrid a fortnight ago. The deal is said to be on a four year basis worth £6.5 million. Question mark about the squad number he will be given : 11 or 7?
Pires Factfile : born Reims, 29/1/73
Former clubs : Reims, Metz, Marseilles
League appearances / goals : 227/51 |
