Further to yesterday's story about Japan's alleged interest in Arsene Wenger, and Arsenal's in Takashi Hirano, a gooner "exiled in Japan.html" for the last 11 years writes with some reflections and corrections.
Tim Burland points out that since Japan became Asian champions,
and performed ok at the Olympics, people over there are quite happy with the current coach Troussier so he will be coach for the World Cup. This is presumably why this time, for once, the Japanese FA took the trouble to dismiss the Wenger rumours.
As for Hirano, Tim says
"One of the brightest Japansese soccer stars? Oh
dear. He's not even in a squad of 45 players chosen for a training camp next
month. He was in the Japanese squad for a while (I think he even played in
the last World Cup), and is a decent J-League player but he's certainly NOT
better than current Arsenal players win the postion he plays (wide left or
right)."
Tim also points out that Hirano did play under Wenger at
Nagoya Grampus 8, and has only been at Kyoto for 6 months
(not 7 years as state previously), arriving after a short spell without a club having fallen out with the Nagaoya boss. His arrival at Kyoto came too late to save them
from relegation to the second division of the J-League.
So the trial story seems unlikely, unless Wenger spotted something in Hirano and reckons he can do his "turn him into a world-beater" thing.
Many thanks to Tim for the info.
