It looks like there's one rumour on the list which we should take
seriously.
Arsène Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal are in talks
with Roma, with the aim of bringing Japanese midfielder
Hidetoshi Nakata to Highbury. "I have already approached Roma. Nakata is undoubtedly a superb player. He stands out, even in Europe."
Before you get too excited (and Nakata would be an exciting signing), we could be getting into another Dudek type situation, as Wenger goes on to say,
"There is a big gap over what they are asking and what we are willing to pay, but both clubs are in talks."
As far as Dudek is concerned, there are (unconfirmed) suggestions in today's papers that Feyenoord have dropped their asking price from £10m to £7.5m, which is close enough to Arsenal's (alleged) offer of £6.5m for some optimism. But balancing that out are quotes from Dudek today in which he says he wouldn't be happy to come to Arsenal and be a reserve to Seaman after all (see Soccernet for more). And remember, Wenger has said he expects Seaman to last another season as our number 1.
Nakata is an attacking midfielder, and if you're wondering
how he'd fit in, Wenger has said
"Clearly, Nakata is a fantastic player. For example, I could have Henry as a lone striker and ask Nakata to play just behind."
Hearing that won't make Sylvain Wiltord any happier. He's
quote today as saying that when he agreed to sign for Arsenal he was told he'd be playing up front regularly alongside Henry.
See BBC Sport for full quotes.
Most of the coverage is suggesting that Wiltord could be on his way out after this. But Sylvain doesn't say he's thinking that way. Quite the opposite: "I honestly don't know what the club wants to do with me. I sincerely hope we can make a new start.
I am ready to go back for training on 16 July and am looking forward to a big season with the team. Great things can be done with the Gunners,"
