The Sydney Morning Herald reckons that Arsenal could now
be turning their attention to Middlesbrough keeper
Mark Schwarzer.
In this article by Michael Cockerill (an Aussie journo said to be close to their national team), the only thing vaguely resembling
evidence is Schwarzer's admission that an offer from Arsenal would tempt him.
Looks like one of those "player trying to make something happen" stories. Schwarzer won acclaim for his performances during
Boro's relegation fight, but with years left on his contract there, and uncertainty over Venables' future at the club, he's
unlikely to be looking forward to more of the same.
Arsene Wenger is in Japan working as a TV pundit during the Confederations Cup, in which Schwarzer put in a particularly good display against Arsenal.... sorry, France.
He's also said to be interested in Brasilian midfielder
Washington (along with Tottenham, see TribalFootball). But really, it would be hard to work as a TV football
analyst and never say anything positive about the players.
All this is probably just people jumping to conclusions as
usual.
Finally, rumours from Japan suggest that Arsenal and Roma's valuations of Nakata are still poles apart.
Thanks to Mark Grynberg for the Schwarzer URL.
