We've refrained from commenting on the growing rumours
that Sol Campbell is edging towards an Arsenal move,
partly so as not to tempt fate, partly because we find it
so hard to believe, and partly because we could end up
spending a lot of time talking about a Barcelona player.
But when Tottenham sites start saying Sol's coming to
Arsenal, it's worth mentioning.
TheSpursweb.com claim an exclusive, saying that
Campbell's set to sign with us for 5 years at
£100k/week. See here for wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Even more definite are Clubcall's claims. Their Tottenham
news line is currently saying that
Campbell is due at Arsenal for a medical on Friday. Thanks
to Jon for the tip-off (but what are you doing ringing Spurs Clubcall?)
There have of course been the usual reports of the player
looking at houses in the London area, and the usual
conclusions drawn. I reckon it's just something footballers
do as a hobby. Many a pleasant weekend Robbie Fowler's spent
cruising the estate agents of Hertfordshire, if everyone
we've heard from over the years is to be believed.
Elsewhere, there are suggestions that Campbell's decision could
depend on results in Spain. If Barcelona fail to get
4th spot in La Liga, and miss out on the champions league,
it could affect the decisions of players other than just Sol.
To finish 4th, they need to beat the team above them, which is Valencia, at the Nou Camp on Sunday. Should be a cracking game and a hard one to call.
ANR make an interesting point,
which is that we shouldn't expect too much activity on the
transfer front before July 5th, as that's the date that
the EU are due to make some decision about footballer's
contracts. Naturally, some things are going to happen before then. Vivas for a start (although he's non-EU, of course).
Let's just hope we don't have to wait that long to hear
confirmation that Vieira's staying.
