Arsenal have reportedly bid GBP 8.5 million for Rangers' Dutch international midfielder Giovanni van Bronckhorst. This, as well as the signing of Sol Campbell on an club record salary, is meant to show Patrick Vieira that Arsenal and manager Arsène Wenger means business. Wenger, officially, says to the Mirror that he doesn't know "what all the fuss is about", and that Vieira will stay. According to Soccernet, Chelsea are reluctant to pay the kind of money Rangers want for van Bronckhorst. As a left-sided midfielder, many fans and experts think the Dutchman would slot perfectly into the Arsenal central midfield. But even more money is to be spent on Tottenham captain Campbell to persuade him to cross the North London divide. If Campbell will get paid more than the current wage structure allows, the current senior Arsenal players would demand the same. That could mean a significant pay rise for players like Vieira, Tony Adams, David Seaman and Dennis Bergkamp. Soccernet also suggests, a little far-fetched, that Arsenal may switch to a 3-5-2 formation to have room for Adams, Campbell and Martin Keown in the starting eleven. The signing of Francis Jeffers, on the other hand, is suggested to be put off for one year. If Jeffers plays the next season for Everton (or the Everton reserves), the GBP 8 million rated striker can leave for free at the end of his contract. However, according to ANR, the Jeffers deal has been agreed already.
