Well, the rumours were getting harder and harder
to ignore, and so it came to pass. Matthew Upson has
joined Birmingham City.
Arsene Wenger's first English signing (not that there have been many) always looked to have enormous potential, but never
had a chance at Arsenal. That's largely due to horribly bad luck with injuries, but there have also been times when players with arguably less ability, and certainly less potential, were preferred.
He leaves us, in the eyes of many Arsenal fans (most, I would guess) with less cover for Keown and Campbell than we would like.
Cygan has had some superb games, and looked the finished article in his first few, but has also had some very dodgy moments. But even if we accept that Cygan is good enough, is one player sufficient to cover for two? Two, at that, neither of whom is a complete stranger either to the treatment table or the referee's notebook.
We have 3 trophies to aim at this season, and it looks likely that we will see the likes of Stepanovs and Luzhny at centre-back before the season's out. Luzhny has had some very good games for us at right back this season, but does the fact that he's remembered how to do what we bought him for mean that he'll be any better at centreback than he was before?
Maybe Wenger's got a surprise up his sleeve. Sebastian Svard for example, came to us as a defender even though he's been played more in midfield recently.
But even if it turns out that we've got some kind of secret cover up our sleeves (or coming in before the window closes), surely we could have got more than £1 million up front?! This is, after all, a 23 year old Englishman with a Championship medal, who looked far from out of place in our double-winning side.
Sorry if I'm moaning too much, but Arseweb's inbox suggests
that the above reflects the views of an overwhelming majority.
