The Premier League have announced that the Man Utd vs Arsenal clash at
Old Trafford is to go ahead on May 8th as planned.
The match was moved from April 13th when Arsenal got to
the FA Cup semi-final, and United themselves announced
2 possible dates, depending on whether Arsenal won that semi-final.
So we figured that United had agreed to these dates. But this
week they've been putting forward the bizarre argument that the
game should be brought forward 48 hours in case they get to
the Champions League final. Bizarre because there's a whole
week between these games. Ok, so they have to play Charlton on the last day of the season, but 3 matches in 8 days is hardly unexpected for a title-chasing team at the end of the season (if indeed they still are chasing titles by then).
Arsenal objected because we've got the FA Cup final on the
preceding Saturday. A little petty too, but they started it, didn't they?
There has been talk of LIverpool trying to get their penultimate
game of the season (Blackburn) moved from Sunday 5th to coincide
with the Arsenal-Man Utd game. Apparently Gerard Houllier is concerned that Liverpool's opponents might collude to stitch
them up. You'd have thought he'd been in the country long enough
now, not to contemplate such absurdities.
