Arsenal (0) 1 - 0 (0) Ipswich Town
Highbury, Saturday 10th February 2001
FA Carling Premiership
The start of the game was preceded by a minute's silence in memory of young Niccolo Galli, tragically killed in a road accident in Italy. See this report.
After such a sad moment, Arsenal applied themselves creditably in the first half, and dominated thoroughly.
It could have been 4 or 5 nil at half-time, and full marks
go to Ipswich keeper Richard Wright for keeping it
goaless virtually single-handedly, with a string of superb
saves.
Henry came on as sub in the second half, and beat the offside trap to run onto a pass from Bergkamp (who started the game alongside Wiltord, both in good form) and score.
Seaman did fine at the other end, apart from a couple of terrible kick-outs. Against that he nearly made a goal for
Bergkamp with a fantastic throw into the opposition half.
But you can see why Wright's challenging Dave for the England
jersey - he gets more chances to show his saving prowess.
The ref provided moments of irritation and amusement. In the second half he pulled play back for an Adams foul in the Ipswich half, having first (to his credit) tried to play advantage.
Grimandi picked the ball up on the half way line and rolled it
the few yards to where the offence had taken place. Although
the ref had
let players kick the ball away earlier, this action was seen
as worthy of a booking and the 10 yard rule was invoked. The ref clearly enjoyed this, for moments later he penalised Ljungberg
similarly and did his marching the ball forward 10 yards act.
Soon after, he blew for a foul on Lee Dixon near the touchline, and we were treated to the sight of Lee picking the ball up and stomping forward a few paces. He did move back again, thankfully, and presumably the ref didn't clock it for the mockery it was.
Players have been sent off for little more. Still, thanks Lee for another great moment. We'll miss that stuff when you eventually hang up your boots.
Man Utd only drew at Chelsea, so the gap is cut slightly. But more significant probably was Liverpool's draw with Sunderland,
which opens up a 5 point gap behind us, although 'pool have a game in hand still.
