Blackburn Rover (2) 2 - 3 (2) Arsenal
Ewood Park, Wednesday 30th January 2002
FA Barclaycard Premiership
Once again a ref tries to halt Arsenal's title charge with a
dodgy sending off, once again Arsenal show their character
and come away with a win.
But also once again, Arsenal's title hopes look fragile
as we squander a comfortable-looking 2 goal lead. Sometimes
this season it's been
like following a Kevin Keegan side!
Bergkamp got us off the mark just before the quarter-hour, hitting a nice left-footed shot after gaining the ball from a
ricochet, and being helped by a deflection on its way in. They
all count, and Dennis continues to make his presence count,
taking advantage of the long-awaited chance he's getting thanks to Kanu's absence.
Henry beat Friedel in a one-on-one 5 minutes later,
thanks to a great pass down the line from Pires. But Rovers
got back into it after half an hour when slopping defending at a
flicked-on short corner allowed Jansen a far post header.
Then they were gifted an equaliser by Luzhny, who slipped over
25 yards out letting the ball go loose to Damien Duff. Jansen
again was on hand to sweep in the low cross.
10 minutes into the second half Luzhny was the noose again,
when he picked up 2 yellow cards in 5 minutes. The second
was somewhat suspect, Alpay going down heavily after what
looked minimal contact.
Rovers went for the throat and we were under some pressure after
that. Andy Cole forced a save from Wright and sent another shot
across the face of goal.
But in the middle of the Rovers onslaught Bergkamp got onto
another excellent pass from Pires and finished with hsi customary cool.
I guess we've got pretty used to playing with 10 men. Or 9 even. It could have been 9 too, when Bergkamp tangled with Johansson
he could have been sent off for the second match in a row.

Most of them focus on the number 43: red cards since Wenger arrived. You won't find so many mentions of the number 25:
consecutive premiership games in which Arsenal have scored.
If we score against Southampton at the weekend it will be
a new record.
