West Brom (1) 1 - 2 (0) Arsenal
The Hawthorns, Thursday 26th December 2002
FA Barclaycard Premiership
One of those games which can win or lose a title. We could
so easily have come out with an undeserved loss, despite dominating most of the game.
The Baggies took the lead withing 5 minutes of the start. They were simply quicker to get going, and forced a few corners including one from a Dichio shot that Seaman had to tip over the bar.
The one that lead to the goal was a softer kind of corner,
because Cole (I think it was him) should have been able to clear for a throw at least. Dichio jumped to meet the high corner about 10 yards out and there was simply no stopping his thunderous header.
Understandably, the home team concentrated mainly on defending that lead from then on. They kept it till the break, after which they were even less adventurous. Perhaps that's a little unfair because Arsenal were also startign to play a bit better. It seemed like a comeback was inevitable but in the end it was a little fortuitous.
The equaliser came soon after the break when Jeffers crept into the right place in the box, but Henry's low cross only found him thanks to a deflection. Full credit to Franny for his positioning and
finishing though.
As the game went on Arsenal brought Kanu and Pires on for van Bronckhorst and Jeffers. Pires made his presence felt but Kanu
had one of those games where his control failed him and made him a bit
of a liability.
The winner came thanks to an error by defender Adam Chambers, who dallied over a clearance a little otuside their penalty area.
Vieira did brilliantly to charge down the upfield hoof, and Henry was first and fasted to react. As the keeper rushed out
to his right to meet Henry and ball, Thierry's first touch was immaculate, just pushing the ball far enough to be able to hook
it round the goalie.
Five minutes to go and there was no time or energy left for
them to come back. And we could all forget the fact that Roberts had seen a great effort come out off the foot of the far post a few minutes earlier.
Craig Holloway was on the bench due to an injury to Rami Shaaban. More on that shortly.
Man Utd and Chelsea both slipped up today, losing to Middlesbrough (who scored 3 times as many goals against Utd as they had attempts on goal against us!) and drawing to Southampton respectively.
So things are looking up. But Liverpool come to Highbury on Sunday desperate to end their worst sequence for umpteen years
(nearly 2 months without a win) so we'll have to be on our look out. From being many people's favourites a couple of months ago, the Scousers have gone to being a team with nothing to lose.
